Pre-word and Idea
Based on Pohx 2.2 Ice Trapper (he just updated it for 3.0), that's my main on Essences league so far. Got a mixed feeling about that one, this build is strong but you'll be arguably glassy until 80+ and third ascension - if you go self-found. Belly of the Beast (5L) is highly recommended but then it wouldn't be cheap. Having like 5.2k hp isn't that glassy but Belly would do great stuff here. I've managed to beat 87 without BotB (with a very few "honest" deaths), so can you, exile, just be careful out there.
Patch 2.6 did some impact cuz of AoE changes but that's not so scary as it sounds.
A simple & cheap build, pretty safe, easy and
reliable - as always. Could be played totally solo self-found.
Since we go Acrobatics there's no choice but life build with lots of evasion.
Since we use Controlled Destruction and/or Elemental Focus, we skip crit nodes.
Since it's a trapper, we pick traps and forget mines.
Since it's a trapper, we pick Saboteur sub-class (for Chain Reaction and Blinding Assault mostly).
Since it's Acro, we go eva-based and spice up things with Blasphemy+Enfeeble.
Since it's no crit build, we get Elemental Overload for plain more damage (we got a poor crit multi anyway).
At lvl 85, "charged" damage with 19 lvl 5L Ice Trap is ~9300 tooltip dps (4 frenzy + 3 power) per one mine, we throw 5 per cast and can have up to 11. Shotgunning works. Do the rest of the math yourself.
Again, don't be hasty, it's an easy-going build
to enjoy, not a ladder-breaker, speed-runner or high-end elitist's
shit. Made for casual by casual. Read the Pohx 2.2 Ice Trapper guide for more hints, tricks and if you miss something.
Tree(s) and leveling
Overall everything is simple.
29 points - after hp's, getting Clever Construction is a very important goal.
Any spell that deals elemental damage is a viable starter, Freezing Pulse being the most reliable. Fire Nova Mine is a good pick and would easily take you to A3, use it on packs - it can't be a quick boss killer (but helps). Don't forget Clarity, Frost Bomb (both is important, level Clarity freely) and Herald of Ice (not really important).
61 points - first AoE cluster, most of hp's and a bit of str as a meta-hp nod. Now we can use 4L Ice Trap, easy leveling. Throw in Frost Bomb and even cold/ele res mobs will fall down in no time.
Somewhere in the mid merc we'd better find 5L to be more effective. Second ascension is quite important too, try to make it asap. Blasphemy+Enfeeble should help a lot, but use Temporal Chains if you like it more.
88 points - going for Acrobatics (whole cluster), and then we have 2 choices here, templar area for AoE and hp or ranger's for the last trap cluster (enabling frenzy charge generation). I chose ranger and that wasn't smart, hp is more desired stat, frenzy charges won't help us much yet.
106 points - this is where I am now at 85 lvl. Next two points would go into Heart of Oak (ranger area), then jewels-frenzys as planned. I can do anything rare up to t12 (quite sure I can go higher but RNG doesn't gives me any better) except some ridiculously rolled TempChains+Vuln+NoRegen maps, but who would.
Aftermath
Go for jewels and frenzy charges, it'd keep you busy until the end. Jewels must be with life to compensate our fragility (well we're not at this moment). Oh I wish for Elemental Equilibrium but there's so much other thing to pick for less nodes...
Some weird paths, huh.
Nothing weird as far as I see, somewhat even dull. The whole hp/ES Melding nodes wheel is especially weak this time (Acro screws ES). Avoid it, spend your points on jewels. Cast speed is useless too.
CI Crit? Not tested
Well, since CI is a meta until 3.0 at least, here's a CI Crit version for all you meta-lovers: click. Hell if I know how it'd work but it should. The gameplay until CI (lvl 69+) will be rough, that's for sure. Don't ask pre-CI tree tho, it's obvious. Also, it means kill-kill-Alira vs bandits, power charges instead of frenzy... and maybe that long road to the south trap cluster isn't worth it now, since we're busy with crit, then things get simplier, and we crit harder at the cost of trap quantity. So much choices!..
Bandits
Oak, kill, Kraytin, that's the way of a trapper. We're poor on hp and eager for frenzy, power charge won't do better than frenzy and anything else is a waste.
Gearing
God bless essences and GGG, gearing is much easier now. We go full eva-based and eva-shield-wield with max hp and resses. Well, you could get eva-smth if it's good and has the right colors, just keep in mind that your body, head and shield must be pure eva. Would be still wrong not to point out that 5/6L Belly of the Beast is highly desirable and Divinarius is plain good to have, but we can play without both. "Yes we can" and this time it ain't a bullshit, guys.
Basic stats priority - hp, res, eva+%eva, mana+mana reg, Str (for red gems).
Helmet and Gloves.
There's nothing special on our helmet or gloves so look for those
basics. Having Str or Dex helps too. Attack Speed, any added damage is
useless.
Boots had to be with movement speed
bonus, the more the better. Any boots without is is nearly crap, even if
you could craft movspeed with Tora - it's only 8-12% (and sucks). They
should be very good life/def/res rolled to be used without movspeed. While Deerstalker looks like a good pair - it's a beginner's choice, too little life, no resses.
Belt is Leather one. HPs and resistances, probably +stats you're missing, if you could balance your resses - Meginord's Girdle is pretty solid but then good rolled rare beats it again.
Jewelry is
the key to balance off the whole instability, any base is welcome as
long as the stat set is decent. Top choices is Two-Stone and Prismatic
rings, they're easiest to cap the resses. Ammy - just use any, +Str is very nice to have here but not that important.
Body Armor
- our main linkage item, you could afford meh stats (HP and res is
still a must tho) if it's 5L or better. Playing with Tabula isn't really
fun, cause you miss a large chunk of stats and spend mana way faster
than you should (Traps eats mana very happily). You'd be able to craft 5L relatively easily (by the
time when there'd be real use for it) by fusing-spam any suitable
6-socket base you'll eventually find. Or poe.trade one, recently I tried to 5L one good white 6S to no avail ("tried" means I spent far more than 10 fusings) - would be cheaper to buy. Belly of the Beast is recommended but not required, and good eva end-game armor (100+ hp, resses and tons of eva in 5-6L) would perform better.
Weapon(s).
We're pretty open-minded here, anything will do,
if it has two things: spell damage and added damage to spells. Even
scepters is ok since we do only elem damage. Cast speed is unimportant,
mana/mana reg, resses, crit things is nice additions but not required.
Dual-wield or Shield?
Eva shield adds like +1k of eva or better, like a half of total, so going dual isn't recommended. Yes we block less but still block, and high eva works wonders with Blasphemy+Enfeeble.
A few uniques
Divinarius, Belly of the Beast, Carcass Jack and Lightning Coil, what else I'd wish for a simpleton like me. *sigh* Again, focus on good rares if you're poor self-founder.
Gems & Links
Warning: tricky coloring, keep your chromies in a safe dry place!
Main Attack (Body Armor):
4/5/6L: Ice Trap + Cluster Traps Sup + Cold Penetration Sup + [Jokers] (GGGxxx)
That's a complete 6L set if you add up those. Jokers are (in a descending order by damaging abilities): Elemental Focus, Controlled Destruction, Traps and Mines Damage Sup. Anything goes well, depends on colors of you links. If you're using CD and/or especially EF - forget about Herald of Ice since it won't do those fancy boom-boom-shatters and plain damage from HoI itself is small-ish. You'll one-shot most normal and magic packs anyway, and bosses is highly resistant to freeze, so this time we won't miss status ailment effects. I'd take CD as the last gem cuz your traps will crit very rarely with CD, not a big deal but...
Curse/Utility (Shield):
1+2L: Stone Golem, Blasphemy+Enfeeble (R BB, good luck painting that, hehe)
Stone Golem is good for aggro (don't be fooled, he won't taunt everyone 100% of time) abd regen (better than nothing I guess). Blasphemy+Enfeeble works great with eva and Acro, very strong defensive combo which I'd recommend to use asap.
Movement (Dagger):
3L: Whirling Blades + Faster Attack + Fortify (GGR)
Personally
I don't like that combo and prefer wand set up (next), but it is fast
and triggers Fortify.
Movement (Wand):
3L: Lightning Warp/Flame Dash + Faster Casting + Lesser Duration (BBR)
Flame Dash is casual skill, LW meant for Lab. Since I'm outta this meta speed stuff, I still like LW (but pressed to WB).
Utility (Helmet):
4L: Frost Bomb + Less Duration Sup + Cluster Traps Sup + Trap Sup (BRGG)
It even does damage but we're using it as a curse/debuff on a harder targets and fou countering some insane hp regen on some "essenced" rares.
Utility (Gloves)
Yes, the Saboteur is a very tricky dawg.
4L: Orb of Storm + Power Charges on Crit Sup + Increased Crit Chance Sup + Culling Strike (BBBG, as if coloring the shield wasn't enough).
This thing does three important things: culls the weak, triggers Elemental Overload and generates power charges (surprisingly good). Don't leave hideout without it.
CWDT (Boots)
1+3L: CWDT+Increased Duration Sup + Immortal Call, Clarity (RRRB, are you sure you want to spend all of your belongings on recoloring? *whispers* I'm playing without CWDT at all! ;))
Not much to say, an obvious combo. Since we have only one aura (Blasphemy), a fully leveled Clarity is a great thing to have.
Honorable mention: Herald of Ice, you could use it if Ice Trap linkage is pure GGGG or GGGB with CD, otherwise it's a waste. Vaal Haste, Vaal Grace and Vaal Lightning Trap - not required but welcomed.
Ascension and Labyrinth
Nothing deals a better "boom" than a Saboteur, all bcuz of his 2nd ascension.
Casual Lab - when you hit 2k hp and ~45 lvl. Pick Bomb Specialist, nothing really special, just making a way to next major upgrade.
Cruel Lab - 3k hp and ~60 lvl. Pick Chain Reaction, now the real fun begins. The Ice Trap itself have a relatively small trigger area but a huge cold explosion, and now when enemy sets off the trap, all of them goes boom, thus our dps only limited by the quantity of traps blown and hit the mobs - all 11 if the traps has been laid good. That's 55k cold damage unbuffed. Just sick.
Merc Lab - 4.5k+ hp, 5L+ and ~70+ lvl. Blinding Assault, very strong defensive tech, works exceptionally well with Enfeeble+Acro+eva, you get hit by mobs very rarely.
Map Lab - when you think you're ready. Check reddit's Labyrinth Daily for a good roll cuz some layouts is a mere suicide (ground spikes is easiest btw). Born in Shadow is the better way, cuz Demolition Specialist would require mines to work properly (put mine - trigger - gain +40% damage - neat, but I'm too lazy for that), Explosive Expert is partially useless since we have nothing in common with brute phys damage, and when 10% elem penetration is nice - we got it already with Cold Penetration Sup. Ofc more penetration won't hurt (sorry if it sounds dirty/dangerous to ya), but then Born in Shadow wins by more reliable blinding... don't forget to put some Stibnite Flask in your belt. Then again, that's just a personal preference.
Masters
Exactly as with other casters out there. Well, first one to get is obviously Haku, for his invaluable armor stuff craft, then we'll get along with Catarina for our weapon upgrades, the third one is Elreon for the jewelry. The fourth slot could be used for switching, but if you're feeling lazy - either Vorici or Tora is
good. Vorici's missions is kinda tricky if he asks not to kill a single
guard or 10 sec of low life, but if you're pretty sure you can't make
it - just kill the rogue exile for the loot, a win anyway. Zana is also decent addition, we could fire Elreon and pick Zara instead in the late game.
Freakin' Scary Things To Fear
Possessed Rogue
Exiles is a pain but very manageable. Since they can't just calm down saying "oh screw that player, let's get some beer" and walk away - you could just run away from them, pooping with traps, and be sure - rogues will regret they can't stop chasing you.
So you should be afraid of most annoying stuff on the maps - no regen, -max res, Vulnerability+Temporal Chains, Blood Magic, Curse Immune... you CAN do 95% of those but really, is it worth it?
Backup Plan
For anything bad that could happen with Ice Trap... hmmm, well, you could try out Trap + [Any Elemental AoE Spell], but that'd require a 6L. Hope they won't touch IT for a long time, cuz actually there's nothing being close to it.
